In a proactive move to address rising public concerns, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, on Friday paid an unscheduled inspection visit to the Idu Railway Station in Abuja. The visit was in response to media reports alleging that all onboard toilets on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) were non-functional.
The NRC boss, determined to verify the claims firsthand, boarded the train and inspected each coach personally, accompanied by senior NRC officials and technical staff.
🚆 Addressing Service Concerns With Action
The inspection followed the circulation of a widely shared article suggesting complete toilet failure on the AKTS—a service that plays a critical role in connecting the capital city to Kaduna. Opeifa moved coach by coach, inspecting the onboard toilets and engaging with cleaning staff and engineers to assess the situation.

“We take all feedback seriously—whether from the media or directly from our passengers,” Opeifa stated. “This inspection underscores our commitment to transparency, safety, cleanliness, and comfort across Nigeria’s rail system.”
✅ Key Findings and Progress
During the assessment, Opeifa commended the AKTS team and cleaning contractors for notable improvements in recent months, stating that most of the toilets were now functional, although there is still room for further enhancement.
He also acknowledged the maintenance routines in place and emphasized the importance of staying ahead of customer expectations.
“Our goal is to consistently deliver a service that Nigerians can be proud of. There’s always room to grow, but the improvement in facilities is commendable,” he said.
📣 A Call for Continued Feedback

Opeifa encouraged passengers to continue using NRC’s customer feedback channels to report complaints, emphasizing that real-time input from users is essential for service improvement.
He also charged NRC staff to adopt a more customer-friendly attitude, reinforcing the Corporation’s renewed focus on passenger experience and satisfaction.
“We are on a journey to build a modern, efficient railway system. To do that, we need the support of the public and the dedication of our workforce,” he concluded.
🛤️ Looking Ahead
With this latest inspection, the NRC under Kayode Opeifa continues to show a hands-on approach in maintaining service integrity and responding to public concerns swiftly. The Corporation has pledged to promptly address any deficiencies while striving to deliver a world-class railway experience for all Nigerians.
